Sound and Fury (2000) - Josh Aronson. (Rated: NR) ASIN: B00005RJ1Y. DVD version also available. Two brothers, one deaf and one hearing, grapple with a decision concerning their deaf children, and the debate that rages through the extended family turns less on technology and medical concerns than social politics and culture. The deaf parents of a school-age girl fear what the implant would do to her unique identity, while the hearing parents of a toddler see no question at all. Aronson gives all sides their say, but ultimately the increasingly angry arguments reveal prejudices and fears from both sides and split the once-harmonious family, much like they have split hearing and deaf communities across the country. DVD version also available.

Sound Off Video - From the Magic Lamp Production's Website: "Deaf hosts Mary Beth Barber and David Sladek lead a distinguished group of deaf and hearing patients through an in-depth discussion of the controversial Cochlear Ear Implant. This informative 60 minute program features doctors that perform the operation, audiologists, implant recipients and members of the deaf community that have deep reservations about the propriety of the implant. Written, produced and directed by deaf filmmaker David Butterfield, who lost hearing in 1982 when contracting a rare virus. He received an implant a few months after producing this program and has regained much of his hearing." Note: I recently had an opportunity to view this video. While much of the info on this video is dated (it was made before implants in children were done at more than a few centers - but I can't find a production date on it), I did find it to be an interesting discussion in which cochlear implant teams addressed many of the concerns the Deaf Community has about cochlear implants. This film is open captioned, as well as signed.

The Miami Cochlear Implant, Auditory & Tactile Skills Curriculum: CHATS Kathleen Vergara and Lynn Weissler Miskiel, Editors. ISBN: 1886887012. This practical handbook guides educators and clinicians as they adapt their programs to include sensory aid training. The curriculum, which has been field-tested, presents goals, objectives, progress charts, evaluation techniques, and teachers’ activities that will maximize speech stimulation, auditory training, and tactile training in an academic program. The authors provide basic information for teachers and therapists who need to understand the ways in which different devices (cochlear implants, hearing aids, etc.) receive and filter sound. You can order this direct from the publisher, Intelligent Hearing Systems
