A Girl Named Helen Keller by Margo Lundell. ISBN: 0590479636. Reading Level: Ages 9-12. The remarkable story of Helen Keller and her special teacher, Ann Sullivan, provides illustrations of a one-hand manual alphabet at the end of the book.

A Very Special Sister by Dorothy H. Levi. ISBN: 0930323963. Reading Level: Baby-Preschool. Laura, who is deaf, is excited about becoming a big sister, but she worries that a new baby who can hear might get more love from their mother than she does. She later tells her mother why she is so sad, and her mother gives a tender answer, perfect for Laura and all the children reading about her who also might be afraid of being displaced by a new sibling.

A World of Knowing: A Story About Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet by Andy Russell Bowen. ISBN: 0876149549. Reading level: Ages 4-8. A biography of the founder of the first school for the deaf in the United States who, among other accomplishments, evolved a new sign language and wrote children's books.

Awful Abigail and Why She Changed by Barbara H. Robbins. ISBN: 0963006010. Reading Level: Ages 4-8.

Ceasar: On Deaf Ears by Loren Spiotta-Dimare. ISBN: 1882728882. Reading Level: 4-8. Based on a true story. It is an endearing story of a deaf puppy who is given a second chance to become someone's beloved pet, rather than being "put to sleep" as an unadoptable stray. It is shows the triumph of determination, on the part of his human companion, to train Ceasar despite his handicap. The companion tape recording enhances the reading experience.

Child of the Silent Night by Edith Fisher Hunter. ISBN: 0395068355. Reading level: Ages 9-12. The story of Laura Bridgman, the first deaf and blind child to be taught to communicate with the outside world, some fifty years before Helen Keller.

Cosmo Gets an Ear by Gary Clemente. ISBN: 0916708241. Reading Level: Ages 9-12. Cosmo and his friend go looking for his "lost" hearing in a series of imaginative adventures.

Dad and Me in the Morning by Patricia Lakin. ISBN: 0807514195. Reading Level: Ages 4-8. A picture book. Early one morning, when it is still dark, a young boy wakes to his special alarm clock. He puts on his hearing aid and his clothes, then goes to wake his father. Together they walk down to the beach. Jacob cannot hear, so he and his father sign or lip-read or just squeeze each other's hands.

Deaf Smith: Scout, Spy, and Texas Hero by Jo Harper. ISBN: 1571680632. In colloquial and simple language, Houston author Jo Harper recreated the life of Erastus Smith who walked to Texas from Mississippi with his hornless cows and consumption. Erastus was always known as "Deaf" or "El Sordo" in Spanish because he could not hear.

Dear Dr. Bell Your Friend Helen Keller by Judith St. George. ISBN: 0688128149. Reading Level: Young Adult. Follows the parallel lives of Helen Keller and Alexander Graham Bell, who continued to encounter and support each other from that eventful meeting when he recommended she be given a teacher and thus led her to Annie Sullivan.

Elana's Ears, or How I Became the Best Big Sister in the World by Gloria Roth Lowell. ISBN: 1557987025. Lacey's luxurious life as an "only dog" changes the day Mom and Dad bring home a new baby. While Lacey goes through all of the confusion and upset that any child feels when presented with a new sister or brother, she eventually starts to like having baby Elana around, and even tries to teach her a favorite hobby: barking. But when Elana takes no notice of all the noise, Lacey realizes that Elana can't hear, and she vows to become "Elana's ears"— and the best big sister in the world. Fastest Woman on Earth by Alida M. Thacher. ISBN: 0817220593. Reading Level: Ages 9-12. Traces the life of stunt woman and daredevil Kitty O'Neal. O'Neil, who became deaf at the age of four months and who was raised orally, has worked as a stunt woman in many popular television shows and movies. As a stunt woman she has broken several records and performed many firsts. She was the first woman to be accepted as a member of the exclusive professional organization, Stunts Unlimited.

Heather Whitestone by Daphne Gray. ISBN: 0310204577. Reading Level: Ages 9-12. Presents the life of the first woman to win the Miss America title while suffering from a physical disability.

Helen Keller by Stewart Graff. ISBN: 0791014126. Reading Level: Ages 9-12. A biography of the blind and deaf woman who rose above her physical disabilities to international renown and who helped other handicapped persons to live fuller lives.

Herbie Hears the Horn: The Journey of a Young Deaf Child from Silence to Sound by Susan Chorost with Susan Stock Illustrated by Steven Parton. ISBN: 0882002120. Reading Level: Baby-Preschool

"How You Hear with a Cochlear Implant" from Cochlear Corp (1-800-523-5798).* Explains what a Cochlear Implant is, how it works, and the entire implantation process. Technically it's considered a coloring book, but only because you can color in the pictures. It contains much more information than you would think a "coloring book" would.

I'm the Boss of my Hearing Loss by Amy Kroll. ISBN: 0974964107. A positive and empowering book for children with hearing loss and their parents. Teaching important concepts about hearing loss, this book uses lively and amusing illustrations the whole family will love. Big, brightly colored drawings engage children and help them learn to manage challenging listening situations and important concepts about their hearing loss.

Laurent Clerc: The Story of His Early Years by Cathryn Carroll, Harlan Lane. ISBN: 0930323238. Reading Level: Young Adult. Laurent Clerc won lasting renown as the deaf teacher who helped Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet establish schools to educate deaf Americans in the 19th century. Now, his character as a  young boy growing up in Paris has been captured in this novel.

Ludwig Van Beethoven: Composer by Dynise Balcavage. ISBN: 0791020827. Reading Level: Young Adult. Narrates the life of the German-born musical genius who lost his hearing completely by age fifty and who is renowned as one of the world's greatest composers.

Talk to Me by Sue Brearley. ISBN: 0713644109. Reading level: Ages 4-8. This book shows how we can talk to each other in different ways: Using pictures on a board, lip-reading or by using sign language.

Scientist and Physician, Judith Pachciarz by Mary Ellen Verheyden-Hilliard. ISBN: 0932469132. Reading Level: Ages 4-8. Describes the life, trials, and triumphs of a very exceptional deaf woman. After Judity Pachciarz became deaf at the age of two, her mother fought for Judith's right to an education. Judith began school at age six, and she was the only deaf person in her class. All her life, she dreamed of becoming a doctor. When she was old enough to enter medical school, Judith faced a great deal of prejudice and rejection. Unwilling to give up her dream, Judith altered her path somewhat and earned a Ph.D. in microbiology. She then continued to apply to medical schools and was finally admitted. When she received her M.D. degree, she became the first deaf person to receive both a Ph.D. and an M.D.

Secret Signs: Along the Underground Railroad by Anita Riggio. ISBN: 1563975556. Reading Level: Ages 4-8. In the mid-1800s, Luke and his mother help support themselves by making panoramic eggs of maple sugar. When a man bursts into their home and accuses them of hiding slaves, Luke's mother denies the charges--although she is planning to meet her contact on the Underground Railroad that very day. With his mother held at home, Luke, who is deaf, must use his resources and creative talents to help make the connection.

Silent Observer by Christy MacKinnon. ISBN: 156368022X. A true life account of growing up deaf in rural Nova Scotia at the turn of the century and her exchanges with Alexander Graham Bell and Helen Keller. The author lost her hearing from "the Winter fever" at the age of two.

Someone Special, Just Like You by Tricia Brown. ISBN: 0805042687. Reading Level: Ages 4-8. Introduces non-disabled preschoolers to a variety of disabling conditions by showing how children with disabilities engage in the same activities as they do themselves. It emphasizes that these disabled children may engage in the activities in a different manner (e.g., a deaf child seeing a story in sign language instead of hearing it read). Includes a bibliography of additional children's books about various disabling conditions.

The Day We Met Cindy by Anne Marie Starowitz. ISBN: 0930323432. Reading Level: Ages 4-8. When Chad's deaf Aunt Cindy comes to pick him up from school one day, he is afraid the other children will laugh at her. Instead, the class starts a new learning experience, with Cindy teaching them sign language. The drawings by this first grade class illustrate the many things they learn from Cindy.

The Story of Annie Sullivan: Helen Keller's Teacher by Bernice Selden. ISBN: 0836814673. A biography of the woman who taught a deaf-blind girl how to communicate with others.

Views from Our Shoes: Growing Up With a Brother or Sister With Special Needs Edited by Donald J. Meyer. ISBN: 0933149980 Reading Level: Ages 9-12.

Words in Our Hands by Ada B. Litchfield. ISBN: 0807592129. Reading level: Ages 4-8. Nine-year-old Michael explains the facts and feelings of family life with deaf parents.

Young Helen Keller; Woman of Courage by Anne Benjamin. ISBN: 0816725314. Reading Level: Ages 9-12. A simple biography of the blind and deaf woman who spent her life writing and helping others with similar disabilities.

"Pictures only" means there is very little text in the book.

"Picture book" means there are pictures with text.

"Beginning chapter book" means there are chapters, large text, and pictures on most pages.

"Chapter book" means the book is mostly text and there may or may not be pictures.
