Glow In The Dark Powders / Frit

Ready Set Glo Powders

The method used below was to make a white bead, and then roll it in the powder. I tapped the excess off, gave it a quick roll in the flame, then cooled it in vermiculite before batch annealing.

Room Light             UV Light                No Light

The colors and how long the glow last are, from top to bottom:

Blue  8hrs
Violet  2 hrs
Funky Pink  2 hrs
Red  10 minutes
Orange  10 minutes
Yellow  2 hrs
White  2 hrs
Green  12-14 hrs
Aqua  10hrs

Funky Pink turned to ash as soon as the hot glass touched it. The Pink and Red sort of bubbled up on the glass like baking soda does - it coats the beads and sort of acts like insulation and will keep the glass hot and soft for much longer than you think it will. Here is what happened to mine the first time I dipped one in red and stuck it in vermiculte. Imagine my surprise when I pulled this out!

The Orange one sets off my CO monitor if I forget to turn my ventilation on first so please take adequate precautions when using these powders.

I have to admit to being a little bit disappointed in these frits, and least the ones I've tried so far. The colors are all great, but when put under UV Light or in No Light, the colors all look the same. Here are the Frit Test beads I made of the 96 COE Confetti Frit in no light. As you can see, there really isn't much color variation.

I've not yet had a chance to test the other COEs of frit, nor have I tested any of their powders.

So, what else can you do with the powders besides roll a bead in them? You can also mix some into clear glass for glow glass. To expand the colors available, try mixing into any transparent glass and let the color of the glass influence the final glow color. Mixing like this it does stiffen the glass up so you can only mix a small amount into it - but that's all it takes. Now you can use it as you would any other glass - to make a bead or to apply as decoration. Here are some stringers I made by mixing CIM Cirrus glass with Glow powders from Ready Set Glow.

And here is a little something I did with one of those stringers.

Glow Inc. and Extreme Glow also offer powders, but I've not tested any of theirs. Ready Set Glo Powders and Glow Glass Ltd. Powders and Frit are available on e-bay. Glow Glass LLC is the same as Glow Glass Ltd. Glow Nation also has powders but I've not had the opportunity to test any of theirs. I have no affiliation with any of these companies.
