Language Lists

Here are some language lists that came about from some discussions on the AV-Circle discussion list. I thought these lists had too much to offer to other parents to let them just get lost in Cyberspace so, with permission, we've preserved these lists. Enjoy!

From Pam Talbot: One of my sessions today got way off track and onto a conversation about traffic which revealed many new expressions.  I thought the list was interesting as there are many concepts that can't be taken literally.  Once parents get the idea they are able to expand vocabulary and discussions further.  The lists could serve as "gap finders" for older students. Here's some concepts related to our discussion and some others I thought of after the session (and added to by a number of members of AV-Circle):

Where does the road go? (roads don't move) Where did you end up? stop short dead end cut me off gutter shoulder short cut scenic route backseat driver hang a left bear right fork in the road side streets highway freeway expressway

parkway traffic jam stuck in traffic heavy traffic tailgate backfire bumper to bumper traffic traffic is backed up Sunday driver overpass take the bus (the bus takes you) pop a wheelie kill the engine going flat out/full bore pedal to the metal going like the clappers

Doctors "practice medicine" or lawyers "practice law"
           (But they don't really have to "practice" any more!)

(I'm resisting the urge to question that last statement)  ;-)

I had a very good time in a session yesterday sorting animals by where they live (jungle, farm, water etc.) We got into lots of good language doing this. The best part was when we got to animals we could not classify: where does an ostrich live? What about dinosaurs?

Here's another brainstorming list...that can actually be a game in itself. The idea is to think of as many for each phrase as possible.
